Even though the invasive burning bush (Euonymus alatus) has been banned from importation into Massachusetts since 2006, the once-popular shrub can still be spotted in gardens up and down the Outer Cape. Birds seed the plant in natural areas — this one is growing on the roadside off Harry Kemp Way in Provincetown. New environmentally conscious homeowners who have inherited this troublemaker can easily identify the plant at this time of year by its fiery leaves and small red berries and can spend the winter contemplating a native replacement should they decide to rip it out in the spring. —Joe Beuerlein
