Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, July 5 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown this week included a Royal Tern, a Long-Tailed Duck, a Pomarine Jaeger, 14 Piping Plovers, 12 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, 3,900 Cory’s Shearwaters, 650 Great Shearwaters, 2,673 Sooty Shearwaters, and 4 Manx Shearwaters.
Also, close enough to Provincetown: a Leach’s Storm-Petrel was seen from a boat near Stellwagen Bank.
A Pacific Loon was found in East Harbor in North Truro this week, an extremely odd time and place for this species.
2 Black Skimmers were seen off the Marconi site in Wellfleet. There was also a Sharp-Shinned Hawk in Wellfleet.
