Take It From a Rainy Day
At this year’s annual town meeting, there will be no “free cash.” Instead, the town will borrow money from the stabilization fund to help finance some expenses, said Interim Town Administrator Charlie Sumner at Monday night’s pre-town meeting. Free cash is shorthand for unrestricted, unspent money from previous years. Wellfleet’s free cash can’t be used, however, because the town’s books are in disarray and the state has not certified the accounts.
“A couple of hundred thousand dollars” will be borrowed from the stabilization fund to help pay for items on this year’s warrant, Sumner said. In late summer or early fall, when the town hopes to have its balance sheets certified, the borrowed money will be “replenished,” Sumner explained.
Meet the Candidates
The Wellfleet Community Forum is hosting a candidates night on Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. The event is open to all via Zoom; the link is posted on the town website. Incumbent Helen Miranda Wilson and write-in candidates John Wolf and Justina Carlson (who is on the select board but did not take out papers to run) will take part. David Agger, who is up for re-election on the cemetery commission, and Donna Rickman, who is running against him, will also participate. Those running for office unopposed are invited to join in. —Paul Sullivan
