PROVINCETOWN — Bernard N. “Barshie” Santos of Provincetown died on April 22, 2020, at Wingate of Harwich. He was 91.
Born in Provincetown, the son of the late Antone and Mary (DeCosta) Santos, he graduated with the Class of 1949 at Provincetown High School, where his basketball skills were well known. After school he enlisted and spent four years in the U.S. Air Force. Returning to Provincetown, he married Helen (Perry) Santos, who died in 2012.
Bernard worked at lobstering for a few years before he joined the Provincetown Dept. of Public Works as a mechanic. He later became a mechanic for the Mass. State Highway Dept. He also was a lieutenant on the Provincetown Fire Dept.’s Engine #2.
Barshie was a member of the Morris Light Post, American Legion and an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Church. He enjoyed fishing on his boat, Scottie. He also liked to garden and could often be seen talking with the people walking by.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis Santos with his wife, Jodi, and Victor Santos all of Truro, and Richard Santos of Provincetown; and by two daughters, Denise Lisbon of Provincetown and Deborah Silva and her husband, Mark, of North Truro. He also leaves grandchildren Scott and Mark Lisbon, Alissa Yong, Brittany Silva, and Sabrina and Aidan Santos, along with five great-grandchildren and many friends.
Due to the current health crisis and resulting government restrictions, Barshie’s family will postpone a funeral Mass until it is deemed safe, at a time and date to be announced. Burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery will be private.
