Rail Trail Meeting on March 10
The state Dept. of Conservation and Recreation returns to Wellfleet Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Council on Aging for another meeting about the proposed bike trail extension from Lecount Hollow Road to Route 6. It has been controversial.
The town’s bike and walkways committee opposes the plan, saying it will bring cyclists to a dangerous section of the highway. A “ghost bike” across the street from the proposed trail end is a reminder that 16-year-old Miles Tibbetts was killed there in August 2013.
Route 6 improvements are also being planned by the Dept. of Transportation (DOT), which is proposing a bike lane all the way to Provincetown along the highway.
Though DOT’s designs have also been controversial, most residents agree it would be helpful if the two bike paths could be completed at the same time. State Rep. Sarah Peake said the state agencies are in fact working together.
“So I’m feeling optimistic,” Peake said. “I feel these will be good projects at the end of the day.”
Peake said the DCR design is not complete, so there is an opportunity for the public to suggest changes. —K.C. Myers
