Deputy to Become Chief as Kulhawik Retires
“I’ll be retiring in a few weeks,” Police Chief Ed Kulhawik told the select board on Monday. “It’s been an honor and a privilege.”
“Almost 11 years,” board Chair Aimee Eckman said. “It’s been great to have you.”
“You’ve been so widely respected,” Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe said to Kulhawik. “You professionalized our force here in Eastham and achieved accreditation of the department and built this amazing team. There are no worries with your leaving because of the fine work you’ve done. You leave the deepest bench behind. I’ll miss your support, your wisdom, your humor.”
After a vacation, the chief plans to work with Beebe and help with the transition to a new chief.
“I’ll always be around,” he promised.
New Select Board Candidate
Arthur Autorino, chairman of the planning board and recently chair of the strategic planning committee, has taken out papers for one of two seats up for election on the select board. Incumbent Aimee Eckman has said she will run again, and member Martin McDonald is not seeking another term.
Town Clerk Cindy Nicholson is running again, and library trustees Mary Shaw and Al Alfano have taken out papers for new three-year terms. Two seats on the elementary school committee will be on the ballot this spring (the incumbents are Joanne Irish and Judy Lindahl) along with the position of Town Moderator, now held by Steve Cole.
The last day to obtain nomination papers is March 30, and the last day to return them is April 1.
If you haven’t registered to vote, Feb. 12 is your last chance to do so before the state presidential primary on March 3. That’s also the deadline to change your party (or Unenrolled) status.
Nauset Revenue Review Tonight
The Nauset Regional School Committee will review its revenue sources tonight (Feb. 6) at Brewster Town Hall as it continues vetting the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. One pot of money, funds that accompany school choice students from other districts, has drawn comment from some who object to the proposed high school rebuild being predicated on including those students in addition to those from the district’s four towns. School leaders argue that keeping enrollment up provides opportunities for more robust educational opportunities.
Leak at the Library
The board of library trustees meeting agenda for Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. is a lengthy read covering a variety of activities and concerns, among them a leaky roof over the new books section. Several panels have been removed from the ceiling and containers are stacked nearby in case the dripping resumes. —Ed Maroney
