    This Week’s Bird Sightings

    Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, June 24 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

    Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown this week included a Mississippi Kite, 2 Arctic Terns, 2 Black Terns, 2 Little Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, 7 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, and 3 Manx Shearwaters. There was also a Green-Winged Teal at the Beech Forest.

    White-Winged Doves were once Sonoran desert dwellers, but they have become common in towns across the American South. In flight, they flash a white stripe across their wings. But they’re recognizable when perched, too. Look for white crescents along the edge of the wing and bright orange eyes encircled by blue rings. (Photo by Gary Kramer/USFWS)

    2 Forster’s Terns were at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary this week. And a White-Winged Dove was briefly seen and heard near Wellfleet Harbor on Sunday.

    That Chuck-Will’s-Widow is apparently not leaving Eastham, ever.
