Conversation Starters
Please, Not the Hamptons
This Thursday, Aug. 12, the Wellfleet Seasonal Residents Association will have its annual “State of the Town” meeting with the select board. The meeting will be held over Zoom at 7 p.m.
The point of the meeting, said association member Susan Reverby, is to open a direct channel of communication between concerned seasonal residents and Wellfleet town government.
“We can ask them what, in their view, are the most important issues facing the town and, in turn, they can tell us how we can help out with those issues,” said Reverby.
From the association’s point of view, this year’s big issues are the continuing drama of Wellfleet’s financial situation, the dearth of affordable housing, tax increases, dredging in the harbor, and the extension of the Cape Cod Rail Trail.
The association is also concerned about whether or not future meetings will be held over Zoom once Wellfleet town boards transition back to in-person meetings, said Reverby. More people were able to get involved when meetings happened online, she noted.
Reverby said her group is also aware of the local housing crisis. “We do have a real, very serious, dire housing issue,” she said. “It’s in all of our interest to fix it. No one wants us to turn into the Hamptons.” —Paul Sullivan
