In a show opening Friday, Aug. 20 and running through Sept. 8, Albert Merola Gallery, 424 Commercial St. in Provincetown, presents new works by Tabitha Vevers titled Ascension.
Triggered by the Covid lockdown, Vevers takes a break from her usual figures to focus on still, contemplative paintings. “I found myself creating meditative, mandala-like images as a means of navigating the pandemic period,” she says. “I am an optimist at heart and while the work bears witness to our shared experience, I hope it also points the way to calmly rising above and beyond it.”
Even with the figures absent, it still looks like Vevers — especially with the gold leaf and rubbery forms — though starker and emptier. It’s just as compelling as she continues to break new ground executed with thoughtful precision.
