Susan E. Modrak died unexpectedly in her Provincetown home on May 11, 2021. She was 74.
Born on Sept. 19, 1946, Sue grew up in New Britain, Conn. and spent her summers at the family cottage at White Sand Beach in Old Lyme, Conn. An outstanding athlete in her youth, she cherished memories of playing baseball, swimming, and living an unrestrained life at the beach until her sudden death.
She graduated from Central Connecticut State University, where she majored in physical education. Deciding not to be a gym teacher, Sue relocated to Provincetown, where she spent most of her life. She was deeply involved in local theater, serving as one of five principals of the Provincetown Counter Productions Studio, a community theater founded by Susan Grilli in 2004. She was in the cast of the 2011-2012 holiday production of the Sondheim-Lapine musical Into the Woods, performed at their 55-seat space at Whaler’s Wharf.
An avid fan of musical theater, she frequently traveled to New York City to enjoy all the latest Broadway plays. She loved music and dancing and particularly enjoyed going to concerts, especially performances by Cyndi Lauper, for whom Sue served as a chauffeur when Lauper was in Provincetown to receive a music award.
From that time on they were good friends. Lauper invited Sue onstage at concerts, and recorded the voicemail greeting on Sue’s phone.
Sue loved children, who were drawn to her open heart, kindness, and zest for life. Sue’s smile and laughter will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
She is also missed by her closest friend, Cassie Spaulding, who gave her unconditional support and love. Her Lobster Pot “family” and her many other friends in Provincetown cherish their times together and remember her as a generous soul.
Sue was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Estelle Modrak, and by a sister, Nancy Moriarty. She is survived by her sister Beth Gozdeck and husband Paul, her brother John Modrak and wife Susan, and by nephews Mark and Eric Modrak and Brett Gozdeck. She also leaves her cousins, Philip and wife Christine, Gregory, and Leslie Medon, as well as Pam Pellet and husband Bob.
Sue’s life will be celebrated at a later date, to be announced.
