Gary Marotta Fine Art presents “American Beauty,” a show of photographs by Ruben Natal-San Miguel documenting the race and class divide in America. It is on view at 162 Commercial St. in Provincetown from Friday, July 2nd through August 6th. There are openings Friday, July 2nd and Saturday, July 3rd from 7 to 9 p.m.
Shot in lush color in New York City and in Provincetown, Natal-San Miguel’s photographs are full of compassion for his subjects and pathos — visual testimonies that speak to notions of white privilege in America.
“America has a culturally accepted norm of what makes someone beautiful. A standard that is hard to meet,” writes Natal-San Miguel in his artist’s statement. “Being light-skinned, blonde, and blue-eyed is the benchmark of beauty, of what is most desirable.”
