Sharp-eyed cyclists may find that the downy architectural stems of Rhus typhina remind them of velvety antlers. A terror in small gardens, because they grow from rhizomes that sucker aggressively and choke out other plants, sumacs are thankfully available in smaller, more behaved cultivars. —Joe Beuerlein
