“Art of the Garden: Double Bloom” is an exhibition, curated by Cherie Mittenthal, of works by Rebecca Hutchinson and Joan Snyder. It is on display at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, 460 Commercial St., from Friday, May 28th through July 18th.
The exhibition originated as a show at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Aside from the obvious similarities in floral subject matter, both artists use grids and mixed media. Hutchinson, a professor at UMass Dartmouth, makes sculptures from porcelain and paper. Snyder — who is the recipient of fellowships from the MacArthur Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts, and is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jewish Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Tate Modern — combines paint with unconventional materials like burlap, dried flowers, papier-mâché, glitter, and mud. Snyder is also the keynote speaker at Castle Hill’s encaustic conference this year.
