Covid-19 Update

As of Feb. 18, Provincetown had five active cases of Covid-19, 84 total cases, and one death related to Covid-19, according to the town’s website.

Sweargate Put to Rest

Town Counsel John Giorgio has found that the select board and Interim Town Manager Charlie Sumner did not violate the town charter when the board called on Sumner to look into a muffled swear during a Zoom meeting Nov. 23.

First the backstory: Many were offended by what they thought was Mark Del Franco of the finance committee swearing during a select board meeting in November. It turned out it was not Del Franco swearing, but select board member John Golden, who fessed up, saying he had been frustrated by a technical glitch. Though Golden made a formal apology, the issue lingered.

Del Franco filed a complaint with the charter compliance commission, charging that Lise King of the select board called for an investigation when she asked Sumner how one can file an official grievance for harassment against Del Franco as a special employee. That’s when she still thought it was he who swore. The town charter states that only the select board as a whole can call for an investigation.

Sumner and his staff listened again to the recording, but that was not an “investigation,” Giorgio said.

If you had to wait for the whole board to vote on an whether the town manager could look into every situation, the operation of the town would come to a halt, Giorgio said.

Golden said there had been “over 100 hours of town employee time” put into this. “We have spent one year talking about masks and the behavior of the finance committee,” Golden said. “We have to do real work.”
