Broto’s “Greetings, Earthling” conference will take place virtually on Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, May 16th. The topic: the role of global citizenship in our climate response. Registration is free at broto.eco, where you can find the full schedule. There are 22 speakers and eight different panels.
The accompanying art show, titled “Agency” and curated by Margaret LeJeune, is also online. View From Tomorrow, by Sydney Parcell, is a rectangle of orange plexiglass mounted in an antique frame. Looking through it mimics the experience of Orange Sky Day, caused by wildfire smoke in the Bay Area on September 9th, 2020. Lake Oroville, by Se Jong Cho, combines landscape with abstraction — it has a post-apocalyptic video game quality. But perhaps stealing the show is Osseous Collaboration, a video of a “musical instrument” by Paloma Marquez made up of rocks, oscillators, and amplifiers.
