EASTHAM — Spring is officially here and with it come the sights and sounds of athletes on the fields, courts, track, and, in the case of the sailing team, the water. Last week marked the start of practice for Nauset Regional High School’s 10 spring sports teams. This is the first of a two-part preview. Next week the focus will be on tennis, golf, and track.
Softball
Coach Harold Pini returns for a 10th year, and his team has eight returning starters from a squad that posted a 7-13 record a season ago. Pini, in his 29th season coaching softball, believes that if his team can get consistent pitching to go with its proven hitting and fielding, they will make a strong bid for a .500 season or better and a spot in the state tournament. It’s a young team, with more than half the players in 8th and 9th grade, but they’re led by four senior captains — Lila Alger, Molly Farrell, Camnie Rose, and Audrey Silva.
Key returners: Brynn Kew, Lila Alger, Molly Farrell, Camnie Rose, Audrey Silva.
Newcomer to watch: Ava Lagasse.
Fun fact: According to Alger, “We have all just met, and already we are really good friends.”
Upcoming schedule: The softballers open their season at home on Thursday, March 27 against Sandwich.
Baseball
Coach Brett Labonte is in his second year. The Warriors are coming off a strong regular season when they doubled their win total from the previous year to finish 14-6. The team reached the second round in the state tournament, losing a competitive game to the eventual champion, Oakmont. The squad lost 10 players to graduation and transfers but will boast a junior-heavy lineup that saw plenty of action last year. Six starters are juniors, as are five of Labonte’s top six pitchers. Labonte’s objective is to field “a competitive playoff team every year,” and he believes that this will be the case in 2025.
Key returners: Paul Alves, James Breda, Jake Doherty, Brody Bassett, Tyler Manchuk.
Newcomers to watch: Colin Potter, Emmett Blatz, Seamus Mahoney, Michael DeSimone.
Fun fact: Every projected starter played on Coach Labonte’s junior varsity squad in his first year at Nauset (2023).
Upcoming schedule: The team travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. this weekend for two preseason games before returning home to host Bishop Stang in the season opener at Eldredge Park in Orleans on Tuesday, April 1.
Girls Lacrosse
Coach Heather Stevens, in her 22nd year, would “love to progress in the tournament” this season after a loss in the Round of 16 in 2024. With eight returning seniors and nine returning starters from an 11-9 team, there is a strong foundation in place to achieve that goal. Stevens believes they have the talent and cohesiveness to make a strong run even in the face of a tough schedule. Zoe Labdon and Julia Kipperman head the returning cast, while Norah Swanson and Maeve Kennally will be a formidable duo in goal.
Key returners: Zoe Labdon, Julia Kipperman, Norah Swanson, Maeve Kennally.
Newcomers to watch: Mariel Hanifan, Sam Curley, Colby Shipman, Maddie Coccoro, Jordan Nye, Ava O’Connell, Megan Sullivan.
Fun fact: The team boasts the “cutest lacrosse dog on Cape Cod.” Sushi, a golden retriever, has been the team’s constant companion and mascot for 10 years.
Upcoming schedule: The Warriors open at home on Tuesday, April 1 against Sandwich.
Boys Lacrosse
Coach Jesse Peno is in his sixth year. The Warriors posted a 9-9 regular season record last year but due to a demanding schedule and competitive games against tough teams earned a very respectable fifth seed in the Division 3 tournament. They made it all the way to the Final Four, a first for the program. With nine starters and over a dozen seniors returning, including league MVP Logan Poulin, Peno is looking for his squad to make another push deep into the state tournament.
Key returners: Logan Poulin, Zach Coelho, Joe Berardi, Michael Flynn, Sawyer McCutchen, Mason Santos, Brendan Peno.
Newcomer to watch: Jack Peno.
Fun fact: Nine players were members of the newly crowned Division 3 hockey state champions.
Upcoming schedule: Coach Peno’s team starts the year on the road against Mansfield on Thursday, March 27. Their first home game is on Friday, April 4 versus King Philip.
Sailing
Coach Alexis Mathison’s sailors had a “really successful season” in 2024 when they posted a 6-4 record and had two girls place third in the Women’s Individual Championships. Mathison and her charges are entering 2025 with high expectations, looking to equal or exceed last year’s win total. The team looked sharp during its first outing on the water last week, exhibiting a high level of communication and competitiveness. Two transfers from Cape Cod Academy (Luke Pierce and Grace Smith) will complement a strong set of veterans.
Key returners: Jessie Swain, Sam Covell, Tommy Poor, Cameron Long.
Newcomers to watch: Luke Pierce, Grace Smith, Andrew Drake
Fun fact: Coach Mathison’s father, Mark, has been her assistant coach for her nine years at the helm.
Upcoming schedule: The team opens on the road on Thursday, March 27 against Falmouth, the first of four consecutive away meets. Their first home meet is not until Thursday, April 10 versus Sandwich at the Orleans Yacht Club.
