EASTHAM — The Nauset High School football team dropped a heartbreaker at Dennis-Yarmouth High School, 45-42, in the 26th edition of the Chowder Bowl on Thanksgiving Day.
Sophomore defensive back Isaiah Robinson had given Nauset its largest lead of the game when he returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-33 with 4:32 remaining.
But Wyatt Stevens scored on a run to bring Dennis-Yarmouth back within 3 points, and then he caught a 33-yard game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds left.
The Warriors’ freshman quarterback Brendan Peno completed 12 of 17 passes for 235 yards and threw for three touchdowns in the loss. Peno, who connected on 56.6 percent of his passes (94 of 166 attempts) this season, accounted for 1,592 passing yards and 19 passing touchdowns. He threw just eight interceptions this season.
In the Dennis-Yarmouth game, Robinson caught four passes for 161 yards to go with two touchdowns, while Logan Daniels Julien rushed for 94 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns in the loss.
Nauset ended the year with a 6-5 record overall under first-year head coach Jesse Peno. The Warriors had four players selected to the Cape and Islands All-League Team, including Dillon White, Raven Bennett, Daniels Julien, and Robinson. Peno got an honorable mention. —Allen Gunn
