Conversation Starters
Fortified Food Exchange
Members of the Nauset Fellowship have installed a new community pantry outside the Chapel in the Pines. Unlike the antique pine cabinet it replaces, the new cupboard was designed to handle outdoor weather. It was built by Will Bullard and installed this past Saturday.
The Nauset Fellowship, a lay congregation affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, began the food exchange last fall. People looking to take or leave nonperishable food can do so at the Chapel at 220 Samoset Road.
Changing of the Guard
Fire Chief Daniel Keane was sworn in last Friday at the fire station. Keane’s promotion from deputy chief followed the retirement of Kent Farrenkopf, who spent the last six years of his 40-year career in fire service in Eastham.
During Farrenkopf’s tenure four new firefighters were hired. The deputy chief position was restored, and the firefighting safety equipment got a complete overhaul, including the replacement of outdated breathing apparatus that was not up to National Fire Protection Association regulations. “Huge, huge money,” Farrenkopf said, “but it was needed.”
Under Farrenkopf, the town also acquired two new ambulances and a search-and-rescue boat. A new fire truck was purchased as well, but it will not arrive for another year because of Covid-related delays.
“I reached my goals,” Farrenkopf said. “I always wanted to be a chief.”
Another New Face in Uniform
At the Nov. 15 select board meeting, Police Chief Adam Bohannon announced that the town had made a conditional job offer to a new officer. Bohannon said the department was conducting background evaluations on the recruit.
If all goes well, the new person will enter the Cape Cod Police Academy next February and begin the job next summer. The department has had an opening since the spring because of a resignation. —Cam Blair
