Four Eleven Gallery, 411 Commercial St. in Provincetown, presents “Stairs a Witch Can’t Climb,” a show of new paintings by Matthew Bielen opening Friday, July 23rd and running through July 29th. The title refers to old, unorthodox New England staircases that came to be known as “Witches’ Stairs” for the superstitious belief their design would prevent a witch from climbing them. Bielen’s acrylic paintings are abstract responses to the myth itself, as well as to Cape Cod’s natural environment. Colors and shapes jostle into a satisfying collusion of forms inspired by the rhythms of the ocean. There is a reception on Friday, July 23rd from 7 to 9 p.m.
