Truro native Maria Dorothea (Veara) Andrews died on June 2, 2025 at Cape Cod Hospital following a succession of serious illnesses. She was 67.

Maria was born on April 12, 1958 to the late Harold and Clotilda “Tillie” (Steele) Veara. She graduated from Provincetown High School in 1976.
Her husband, Michael Andrews, said his wife had been ill for most of this year, beginning in February when she was hospitalized for congestive heart failure and sepsis. She was then admitted to Seashore Point in Provincetown, where she underwent three months of intense pulmonary physical therapy.
Michael said they were so happy when she was discharged — only to have her suffer a recurrence on May 20. Maria was hospitalized again with a collapsed lung. She was scheduled to return to Seashore Point on June 2. Michael said they spoke at 10:15 on the evening of June 1, when he reassured his wife he would be there to greet her upon her return. That was not to be.
Maria and Michael had just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. “Now she’s gone,” he said. “I’m broken hearted, devastated, lost. We were always together. All the time. I don’t know what I’m going to do without her. She was my whole life.”
The couple, who by all accounts were inseparable, met at the former Tele-Rental video store on Shank Painter Road, now the site of Cumberland Farms. They were married on April 7, 1990 by a justice of the peace before renewing their vows the following December at St. Peter the Apostle Church, where they both were communicants.
Maria’s sister-in-law, Deborah Andrews McGonnell, said Maria was friendly and outgoing. She taught catechism, loved to read, crocheted afghans, and did word search puzzles. Deborah also said that Maria made a terrific kale soup, and that her late father, the renowned boatbuilder Joe Andrews, loved it and said it reminded him of his mother’s.
Maria and Michael loved anything they could do together, including riding around town and watching the sun set.
Maria worked at several Provincetown businesses including the Adams Pharmacy, Hopkins Cleaners, and as a pharmacy technician at Stop & Shop.
In addition to her husband, Maria is survived by her brother, Manuel Veara of Heartland, Maine and his partner, Michele Kent-Webber of St. Albans, Maine; and her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Deborah McGonnell and husband John of Onset, Victoria and Paul Mendes of Provincetown, and David Andrews and Charles Edwards of Arlington, Va.
She is also survived by her uncle, Francis Veara; her aunts, Nancy Veara, Rosie Mullen, and Joann Castricum and husband Peter; her nephews, Manuel Veara and partner Loagyn Moore and Adam and Joshua Mendes; and her cousins Patty Foster, Christopher Vera and wife Stephanie, and Francis Davis.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 18 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown, followed by a private burial.
Donations in her memory be be made to Outer Cape Health Services, 49 Harry Kemp Way or the Provincetown Rescue Squad Association, 25 Shank Painter Road, both in Provincetown.
