“They Arrived in a Masked World” is the show that artists Mike Carroll, Lucy Clark, Deb Mell, and Laura Shabott were meant to have last year before the pandemic brought everything to a halt. It is now opening at Berta Walker Gallery, 208 Bradford St. in Provincetown, on Saturday, July 3rd from 3 to 5 p.m., and running through July 17th.
Carroll continues his painted jigsaw-like compositions of colorful interlocking shapes that are part control, part release. Lucy Clark’s undulating forms take landscape into the mystic, while Deb Mell’s work is as full as Clark’s is spare, with birds, snakes, and strange figures engaged in a kind of a mythical Mardi Gras. Shabott continues her vigorous study of the figure as it pertains to Hans Hofmann’s push-pull legacy.
