Driving deep into New England to leaf-peep, you won’t be likely to spy many sweetgums — the tree’s range comes to an end in Connecticut and western Mass. The predominantly Southeastern near-native species thrives here on the Cape in cultivation, though, and more than holds its own when it comes to foliage — the star-shaped leaves of Liquidambar styraciflua will turn every fall color you can think of, from yellow to orange to red to purple, sometimes all on the same tree at once. The specimen across from town hall in Provincetown is currently offering up every shade of apple between Gala pink and Winesap maroon, like an orchard trip and leaf excursion rolled into one.
