Joye Daley died at her daughter Shannan’s home in New London, Conn. on Aug. 21, 2022, of complications from COPD. She was 80.
The daughter of the late Viola and Robert H. Morris, Joye was born in Truro on May 30, 1942. She attended Provincetown High School. The class of 1960 edition of The Long Pointer said her ambition was to become a nurse.
She put that ambition on hold when she married Paul D. Daley in June 1962 and became a mother the next year, then a den mother to Cub and Boy Scouts, and a troop leader to Brownie and Girl Scouts.
Joye was a talented craftswoman who sewed her children’s uniforms and sewed, knitted, and crocheted other clothing when she couldn’t find what she wanted at thrift stores.
She instilled in her children a deep love of nature through her gardening and appreciation of the ocean, animals, and walking. She was the kind of mother who, on a field trip, would know more bird species than the science teacher did and could recite history at the back of the tour. She recommended the children read Stanley Kunitz when their class was starting to read Robert Frost.
Joye shuttled the kids to music and sports events and sat happily through every torturous concert and play. She liked the music loud, and books were to be devoured.
She did return to work, at Seashore Well Drilling, Adams Pharmacy, J&J Ice Cream, and at the front desk of the Outer Reach Resort. But she finally answered her true calling after her husband died in 1989. Fulfilling her high school ambition, she went to work for the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod.
Joye spent the next 18 years caring for people up and down the Cape, including many in hospice, until her own health forced her to retire.
She moved to Connecticut to be closer to her daughter Shannan. There, she proudly bought her first home on her own and spent the next decade fixing it up to be just right for reading all the books, growing all the flowers, and blasting all the music she and her beloved dachshund Maggie wanted to listen to.
Eventually she moved in with Shannan and introduced another generation of children to the importance of walking, birds, puzzles, old stuff, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Joye is survived by her sister, Rebecca Whiting of Orleans; daughter-in-law Janet H. Daley of Orleans; daughters Kathleen J. Sheehan of Pocasset and Shannan M. Daley of New London, Conn.; grandchildren Alana J. Collins and husband Jared of Orleans, Paul R. Daley of Harwich, John R. Daley and wife Sydney of Harwich, Cassandra L. Daley of New London, Daniel P. Sheehan of Pocasset, and Kelsey E. Sheehan of Pocasset; great-grandsons Leland Daley of Warwick, R.I. and Cameron Rankin of New London; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul D. Daley; her sons Paul John Daley and Kevin C. Daley; and siblings Robert Morris, Hollis Morris, Letitia Watson, Linnell Nickerson, and Collin Morris.
A funeral service took place on Aug, 29 at the Christian Union Church in North Truro. Burial was at Snows Cemetery in Truro.
