First Housing Angel
The housing authority announced at its March 4 meeting that the Housing Angels Program will be getting its first donation toward affordable housing.
“We have a beautiful donation in the works,” said Elaine McIlroy, chair of the housing authority. The estate of Katherine Stillman has pledged $25,000 toward affordable housing. “She gets the first pair of wings,” said McIlroy.
The Housing Angels is a program of the local housing partnership, housing authority, and affordable housing trust seeking houses, land, and monetary donations for affordable housing.
In the same meeting, the members discussed the bleak real estate landscape for those in need of affordable housing. A recent recipient of down-payment assistance had to return the loan. During a delay with the bank, McIlroy said, somebody else offered to pay in cash for the full value of the house, and the seller accepted.
With the housing buy down application deadline looming, member Gary Sorkin asked for a report on the availability of real estate. Member Sarah Pechukas, who is a real estate agent, said, “It’s harder than I’ve ever seen it here and I’m hoping its temporary. I’m hoping things ease, for now there’s absolutely nothing.”
If the housing authority makes a buy down grant, she said, “We don’t have a house.”
“We also don’t have any rentals, correct?” asked member Mia Baumgarten. “We have nothing,” responded Pechukas. “It’s just all so very hard right now. It’s got to change.” —Tessera Knowles-Thompson
