Covid-19 Update
As of Feb. 1, Provincetown had three active cases of Covid-19, 78 total cases to date, and one death, according to the town’s website.
Economic Stabilization and Sustainability
The new Economic Stabilization and Sustainability Subcommittee (ESS) held its second public meeting on Jan. 27. The subcommittee was established by the select board in August to “address impacts of the Covid-19 crisis on both the local economy and community.” Members include Dara Onofrio, Wiebe Tinga, Robert Davis, Patrick Patrick, Lawrence J. Mitchell III, Patricia Miller, Kiumars Q. Amiri, and select board member Lise King.
Covid-19 has provided an opportunity to look at what happens to the community when a major event occurs, King told the Independent; she said she proposed the ESS in hopes of making the community more “shock proof.” In the short term, the ESS is tasked with completing a report within six months with policy recommendations for both immediate and long-term solutions.
The subcommittee discussed plans to develop a community resiliency fund to provide emergency assistance to individuals and families affected by the pandemic. Inspired by the city of Randolph’s Resilient Randolph Fund, which won the Mass. Municipal Association 2021 Innovation Award, the ESS voted to recommend the select board consider establishing a similar fund.
The ESS plans to speak directly with members of the community about how they’ve experienced the economic effects of Covid-19. The subcommittee meets virtually every other Wednesday; meetings are public. The next meeting will be Feb. 10.
