Covid-19 Update

As of Jan. 7, Eastham had six new cases within the preceding 14 days and 52 total cases to date, according to the Mass. Dept. of Public Health weekly Covid-19 report. No Eastham Covid-19 deaths have been reported.

Boating Bylaw Revisions

A public meeting on proposed revisions to the town’s waterways bylaws is scheduled for Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

The proposal includes the codification of no wake zones, instructing vessels to operate at only headway speed in all areas within 150 feet of bathers, divers, piers, docks, floats, moored vessels, small boats propelled by means other than machinery, vessels not underway, or the shore.

Areas to be classified as no wake zones include the entrance and inner basin of Rock Harbor, Hemenway landing and the waterway to the north and south of the landing, the entirety of Cable Creek, and the Nauset Inlet mooring field, as designated by the harbormaster.

“There’s been a no wake zone, but we haven’t had someone out there enforcing it,” said Aimee Eckman, vice chair of the select board. “The harbormaster’s plan is to have more of a presence.”

Frequently out on the water in her own boat, Eckman noted this past summer was “really crazy…. I would go slow and they would stack up behind me,” she said.

After public input is heard at the Jan. 20 meeting, the proposal will go before the select board for a public hearing. The proposed changes would require town meeting approval.
