Conversation Starters
Covid-19 Update
As of Oct. 14, Eastham had one new active case within the last 14 days, and 15 cases considered recovered.
Town Hall Opening
Town Hall is now open to the public two days per week, Mondays and Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Public access will be limited to four persons at a time.
“We do ask that people wear masks. We are taking temperatures and we do fill out a contact tracing form,” Town Adminstrator Jacqui Beebe said at Monday’s select board meeting.
Spooky Board
The select board will be represented at the Oct. 31 Eastham Recreation Halloween Parade, as they made their plans during Monday’s board meeting for candy, haybales, and costumes.
“I’m already stockpiling candy,” said chair Jamie Demetri.
With candy and haybales arranged, board member Arthur Autorino wondered whether he had to do anything other than show up.
“You need to be spooky,’’ replied Demetri.
Appointments
Beverly McGlynn Hobbs was appointed to the Human Services Advisory Committee, filling the seat left vacant by Joan Martern’s resignation last Nov. 19.
Jamie Demetri has been appointed as a voting member of the Nauset Estuary Stakeholders group.
Capital Idea
Low interest rates may prompt some earlier-than-planned capital purchases, as Finance Director Rich Bienvenue reported a recent 15-year bond issue solicited a bid of 1.13 percent for just under $3 million.
“Almost free money in that regard,” said Bienvenue at the Oct. 14 finance committee meeting.
While not specifically planning to accelerate any capital purchases, Bienvenue said he would consider taking advantage of the attractive borrowing rates for big ticket items as he put together the capital plan for the upcoming year.
“I’m not advocating one way or another at this point,” he said, adding, “I do know the fire department is looking at a pretty sizable and expensive fire truck that is an opportunity to consolidate a couple of trucks into one truck. Now may be a very good time, at one percent interest, to do something like that.” —Linda Culhane
