Longtime Provincetown resident David Tobin, a talented event planner, died peacefully at his home in North Truro on Oct. 1, 2022. He was 57.

Throughout his long career in hospitality, during which he worked for many Provincetown restaurants and at national and international venues, David’s work was fabulous. He loved to make magical experiences for people, turning a meal into an occasion and an occasion into an event.

For 17 of his 35 years in Provincetown, he worked for Boston-based Rafanelli Events, where his kindness, determination, and unflappable personality made celebrations and parties better. His work took him from Provincetown to Palm Beach, Istanbul, and the White House, where his presence was always charismatic and comfortable.

At restaurants, his combined poise and ability enabled him to work the front of the house, the back of the house, or as a cook. He always seemed to know what a restaurant needed.

His lifelong dream, however, was to run his own guest house. In October 2021, David went to Puerto Rico to take over the Villa Coral on the island of Vieques. A few months later he was diagnosed with cancer. He returned to Provincetown in February 2022, where his close friends rallied round to care for him in his illness.

David was born on March 2, 1965 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Ruth and Myron Weinstein. He was a charismatic child with many friends, winning the hearts of all the mothers in his neighborhood.

He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.

In the early 1980s, David worked in restaurants and soaked up time on the beach with friends from Key West to Fire Island before settling in Provincetown in the summer of 1986. He became a fixture at Franco’s Hideaway, where he was an integral member of the staff. He most recently worked at the Mews and at Front Street.

David enjoyed playing at the Provincetown Tennis Club, befriending every dog in sight, and getting away to Disney to feed his love of the magical as often as he could. Through all his adventures — he especially enjoyed traveling to Portugal and Spain — he always made time for his family, often staying with his sister or mother in New York for a few days before hitting the road for his next trip.

He was never one to let his opinions go unstated, and he had an affinity for detail. Creating beautiful, intricate experiences for people brought him great joy. He would light up a room the minute he walked into it, and then take a few minutes to rearrange the furniture.

Known for his sense of humor, charm, and generous spirit, David was a true friend to those who worked and played with him.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Moses of Staten Island, N.Y.; his half-brother, Barry Semel-Weinstein of Manhattan; a niece, Taylor Placido of Lynbrook, N.Y.; a nephew, Nicholas Placido of Astoria, N.Y.; cousins Sue and Russ Pollack of Middletown, N.J. and Terry Degatano of Westchester, N.Y.; and many loving friends.

He was predeceased by his father and by his sister, Lori Placido.
