Confirmed rare bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the seven days preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 4 included the following, recorded on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird website:
Thick-Billed Murre, Uria lomvia. Over 100 sightings at MacMillan Wharf throughout the week.
Black Guillemot, Cepphus grylle mandtii. Thirty-one sightings at MacMillan Pier from Feb. 1-3.
Pacific Loon, Gavia pacifica. At Race Point, 17 sightings on Feb. 1 and 2, then just one scoped on Feb. 4.
Short-eared Owl, Asio flammeus. At Race Point, seven sightings on Feb. 2, then two on Feb. 3 and again Feb 4.
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Sphyrapicus varius. One scoped on Longnook bluffs in Truro on Feb. 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Regulus calendula. Two sightings at Walker Conservation Area in Wellfleet on Feb. 2.
Chipping Sparrow, Spizella passerina. Two sightings of 14 on Feb. 2 and sightings of 9, 10, and 12 on Feb. 3 at Evergreen Cemetery in Eastham.
Clay-colored Sparrow, Spizella pallida. Two sightings in Eastham on Feb. 2 and two on Feb. 3.
