ORLEANS — The Firebirds had four players named to the Cape Cod Baseball League East Division All-Star Team on Monday. The All-Star Game is scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at Whitehouse Field in Wareham. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
Firebirds second baseman Nate Furman, outfielder Travis Honeyman, designated hitter Luke Keaschall, and pitcher Bryce Warrecker were all given the nod.
Furman, out of UNC Charlotte, is hitting .306 with eight RBIs. He’s moved about the batting order for the Firebirds but is routinely in the leadoff or second spot. He’s also hit two doubles and a triple, with 12 walks. His batting average is tops on the team and sixth in the league.
Honeyman has driven in 10 runs this season and his .289 average ranks 12th leaguewide. The center fielder from Boston College has 24 hits this season, including four home runs and eight doubles. Honeyman has had a handful of strong performances, one of which came in a 3-for-4 outing in a loss to Bourne back on June 18.
Warrecker has collected three wins in seven starts and has posted a league-leading 0.41 ERA. The righty out of Cal Poly has allowed just five walks and struck out 21 in 22 innings pitched. He’s given up just one earned run this season.
Keaschall, meanwhile, ranks 10th in the league with a .292 batting average. The shortstop has had eight multi-hit games, including a 2-for-5 outing with three RBIs in a loss to Hyannis on July 10 and a 3-for-4 performance against Chatham on June 29. Keaschall, who plays at San Francisco, is tied for second in the league with 35 hits.
The Firebirds were scheduled to play Falmouth on Tuesday and at Brewster on Wednesday.
Orleans 6, Cotuit 0
The bats came to life late for Orleans, who topped West Division-leading Cotuit 6-0 on July 14. Chris Clark stood tall on the mound for the Firebirds, pitching four scoreless innings and giving up just one hit. Orleans took a 1-0 lead in the 8th inning when Nate Furman singled on a 2-2 count to drive in Nik McClaughry. The Firebirds then tacked on five more runs in the 9th with Luke Keaschall getting three RBIs with a bases-clearing double.
Orleans 2, Harwich 0
Kyle Carr tossed 4 1/3 strong innings to lift Orleans to a 2-0 win over Harwich on July 15. The lefty out of San Diego gave up just two hits and struck out four. Cole Stallings and Sam Conte followed on the mound, surrendering one hit each. Luke Keaschall and Cam Jones each drove in a run with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 3rd for the only runs of the game.
Hyannis 9, Orleans 1
Orleans fell to Hyannis, which is trying to keep pace with the West Division-leading Cotuit Kettleers. Donye Evans suffered his worst start of the season, giving up five runs on four hits in just 3 1/3 innings. Cole McConnell and Ildefonso Ruiz each hit two-run homers in back-to-back frames off Evans and Cole Reynolds. Jake Berry was strong on the hill for the Harbor Hawks, allowing just three hits and one run in four innings.
Orleans 1, Wareham 1
Orleans and Wareham played to a tie on July 17. Both teams struggled to push the winning run home as they combined to leave 15 men on base. Both starting pitchers went five innings, with Patrick Reilly giving up just one hit and one run for the Firebirds. Wareham led 1-0 after Max Anderson’s sacrifice fly scored Hogan Windish. Isaac Humphrey scored from third on a fielder’s choice to tie the game.
