Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, May 11 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Cattle Egret is still hanging around at Fort Hill in Eastham.

Same with the Common Merganser at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Little Gull, a Glaucous Gull, an Arctic Tern, 12 Piping Plovers, and 3 Manx Shearwaters.

Also, a Cape May Warbler and a Blue Grosbeak were seen in the Beech Forest in Provincetown.

We don’t have exact locations, but the Audubon reports spring arrivals continuing to increase in numbers, with Black-and-White Warblers, Northern Parulas, Common Yellowthroats, and Blue-Headed Vireos becoming regular sightings over the past week.

Birds at High Head/Pilgrim Heights in North Truro included 3 American Wigeon, a Blue-Winged Teal, a Caspian Tern, a Little Blue Heron, 68 Sharp-Shinned Hawks, and 3 Evening Grosbeaks; 2 Evening Grosbeaks were also seen elsewhere in North Truro.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, a Black Guillemot, a Glaucous Gull, and a Caspian Tern.

A migration watch at the Provincetown Airport on Sunday tallied 45 Sharp-Shinned Hawks, 3 Cooper’s Hawks, a Broad-Winged Hawk, 14 American Kestrels, 7 Merlins, a Cliff Swallow, 72 American Pipits, 82 Purple Finches, 22 Pine Siskins, 618 American Goldfinches, 3 Rusty Blackbirds, 524 Yellow-Rumped Warblers, and a Cape May Warbler.

Widespread new spring arrivals in the last few days include Least Terns, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Gray Catbirds, Great-Crested Flycatchers, House Wrens, and Yellow Warblers.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, 7 Common Murres, 120 Razorbills, and a Manx Shearwater. A single Northern Waterthrush and a single Black Vulture were also seen in Provincetown.

On April 22, a single Sandhill Crane was seen flying near Corn Hill Beach in Truro. Two days later, on the 24th, two birds passed High Head in Truro. A single Little Blue Heron was also seen in Truro.

An Eastern Kingbird was a new spring arrival seen at the Wellfleet Bay sanctuary.

A single Black Vulture was the story this week in Eastham.

Lots of birds in Provincetown: Sightings at Race Point this week included 4 Red Phalaropes, a Thick-Billed Murre, 76 Common Murres, a Black Guillemot, a Pacific Loon, 160 Red-Throated Loons, 16 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, 14 Iceland Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, 2 Northern Fulmar, 2 Manx Shearwaters, and 1,520 Northern Gannets. A Northern Shrike was nearby at Snake Hill. There were flocks of Red Crossbills at many places on the Cape, including 39 in Provincetown.

New spring arrivals on the Cape this week included 2 Black-and-White Warblers in Provincetown.

Among new arrivals in Eastham was a Chimney Swift. Also in Eastham, 2 Leach’s Storm-Petrels were sighted at First Encounter Beach.

In Wellfleet, someone reported an American Tree Sparrow.

Against all odds, there were no reports of rare birds in Truro this week.

That Tufted Duck cannot get enough of Great Pond in Eastham.

6 Evening Grosbeaks were reported in Wellfleet.

There were 10 Common Redpolls in Truro.

37 Common Redpolls were seen at Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet, and 24 Evening Grosbeaks continued at a feeder elsewhere in Wellfleet.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown this week included 2 Pacific Loons, 14 Red-Necked Grebes, 19 Common Murres, 2 Thick-Billed Murres, 240 Razorbills, 2 Black Guillemots, 26 Iceland Gulls, a Lesser Black-Backed Gull, a Short-Eared Owl, a Snowy Owl, 2 Common Ravens, and a Northern Shrike.

“Amazingly,” the Audubon’s report says, there is a Rufous Hummingbird that “continues to successfully overwinter at a private feeder in an Outer Cape town.” Mark Faherty, the Audubon sanctuary’s science coordinator, did not respond to inquiries about just which Outer Cape town should win the “most globally warmed” designation before press time.

No birds were reported in Truro, unless the hummingbird mentioned above is hiding out there.

A Tufted Duck continues in Great Pond in Eastham this week, where 61 Ruddy Ducks, 20 Ring-Necked Ducks, 2 Red-Throated Loons, and 2 Common Ravens were also noted.

Also, that male Painted Bunting is still visiting a feeder in Eastham. (Meanwhile, a female has just been seen visiting a nearby feeder in Orleans.)

Strangely, nobody in Truro saw a single bird all week.

In Eastham, a Tufted Duck was discovered in Great Pond this week. A male Painted Bunting has been visiting a feeder in town — he’s been there off and on since November. Also spotted were 58 Common Redpolls and at least one Baltimore Oriole.

Three Evening Grosbeaks were seen in Wellfleet.

There were 12 Red Crossbills in North Truro.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, 2 Dovekies, 11 Common Murres, 3 Thick-Billed Murres, 15 Iceland Gulls, and a Snowy Owl. Also, at least three North Atlantic Right Whales were seen from Race Point.

An Eared Grebe was discovered in Provincetown Harbor last week, where other sightings included a Purple Sandpiper, 4 Thick-Billed Murres, and a Peregrine Falcon watching them all from the Pilgrim Monument.

Sightings at Race Point included at least 2 Pacific Loons, an Atlantic Puffin, 3 Dovekies, 17 Common Murres, 548 Razorbills, a Black Guillemot, 102 Black-Legged Kittiwakes, a Northern Shrike, and, no, these are not birds, but at least two North Atlantic Right Whales.

There were 50 Common Redpolls at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary, and, elsewhere in Wellfleet, 2 Rusty Blackbirds and 26 Evening Grosbeaks were reported.

Baltimore Orioles were seen in Eastham.

A White-Crowned Sparrow was seen in Wellfleet and so were at least 3 Evening Grosbeaks.

Yellow-Breasted Chats and Baltimore Orioles were sighted in Eastham this week. No word on exactly how many or where. Red Crossbill reports continue to be widespread, including 45 at Nauset Beach.
