Artists Elizabeth and Patricia James-Perry (daughter and mother, respectively), residents at Twenty Summers’ Hawthorne Barn this week, are giving a Zoom talk on Saturday, May 15th, at 1 p.m. It will concern the use of natural, locally sourced dyes in their work. Registration is free at 20summers.org.
Both Elizabeth and Patricia are members of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe on Martha’s Vineyard. Elizabeth, who also holds a degree in marine science, specializes in wampum carving, weaving, and dyeing. Patricia’s background is in scrimshaw, pottery, and painting.
“Cultural arts contain so much sophisticated traditional ecological knowledge that has gone into making those arts what they are,” says Elizabeth in a film by the Mass. Cultural Council. “That’s knowledge accrued over countless thousands of years.”
