See How Their Gardens Grow
You don’t have to know a thing about gardening to add a splash of color to this year’s Eastham Garden Tour. Thanks to the Eastham Painters Guild, you can help create a public mural as part of 2021 Creative Gardens of the Outer Cape tour.
The mural’s creation begins on Saturday, July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Windmill Green, where 96 12-inch by 12-inch wooden squares and painting supplies will be available for free for people to create artworks that will be part of the mural. It will be assembled at the Eastham Superette on July 10 from 11 a.m. to noon.
The garden tour is on Tuesday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five gardens are on the tour and visitors can pay the $5 admission at each location or purchase a $25 whole-tour ticket that includes the location of a sixth mystery garden and a set of “garden quest” questions. All proceeds will benefit the Eastham Public Library.
The quest asks two questions about each garden on the tour. “It doesn’t matter if you get them right or wrong,” said Willow Shire, one of the event organizers. “The point is you go and you look more carefully at the garden.”
One garden even has some skulls and bones from sea animals, including a whole skeleton of a seal that is the subject of a quest question.
“Kids love this,” said Shire, adding that kids under 12 years are free.
Home owners will be present to answer questions about their gardens.
Mark Faherty from Mass Audubon will be talking about pollinators and other botanical subjects at one garden while another will have an ice-cream truck. Each garden will host a plein air painter, whose work will be available at a wet paint sale following the tour.
