Carol Phillips Green of Truro died peacefully at home on Aug. 2, 2021 at age 91, as two hummingbirds hovered just outside her window. She was the daughter of the late Madelyn and Seymour Phillips.
Carol fell in love with Truro in the early 1980s, and by 1989 had completed the design and construction of her beautiful home overlooking the Pamet marsh and Corn Hill. She dreamed of creating a place where her family and friends could joyfully gather and was successful beyond her wildest imagining. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, along with an ever-widening network of friends, were embraced by her welcoming nature and good humor.
Carol’s intellectual curiosity and compassion led her to participation and then leadership roles in several local cultural, humanitarian, and environmental causes. She served on the boards of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, the Truro Conservation Trust, the Truro Council on Aging, the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, and the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. Her determination and support were pivotal in creating WHAT’s 210-seat theater, which opened in 2007.
Of all the surprises that Truro gave Carol, perhaps the greatest was discovering true love at age 69, when Ed Friedman first came to her as a gentleman caller. They married in 1999 in Wellfleet and had a joyous and romantic union until Ed’s passing in 2008.
Those who knew Carol could not help being struck by her kindness and generosity.
She is survived by her daughter Cathy and husband James Starr; her son, Douglas, and spouse Heidi Howard; and her daughter Janet. She also leaves grandchildren Michelle and spouse Matt, Tory and spouse Joe, Kristine, and Matthew and partner Mary. Carol joyfully welcomed two great-grandchildren, Theo and Tessa Poppy. She is also beloved by Ed’s children, Michael, Daniel, and MaryEl, and their families.
Carol was predeceased by her adored brother, Lawrence Phillips.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 at WHAT. Send stories or remembrances to the family at [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, 2357 Route 6, Wellfleet 02667 or the Center for Coastal Studies, 5 Holway Ave., Provincetown 02657.
