A More Engaged America
To the editor:
To say that I was disappointed with the 2000 election, Bush vs. Gore, would be an understatement of epic proportions. But we survived as a democracy; the rule of law and the Constitution won in the end.
This recent election is equal to that other one: There are many voters pleased with the outcome and many who are not. There are those who call for all manner of remediation to continue the Trump presidency, and many others who say that the rule of law and the instructions of the Constitution are the bottom line.
To those who wish to continue the Trump presidency, I extend my sympathy. To those who celebrate the new president, I urge you to strengthen this faltering democracy by becoming increasingly involved. Write letters to the editor of your newspaper explaining your political stance and ethics. Contact your senators and congressman and do the same.
In four years, be proud that you have become a stronger, more engaged American.

‘Blood Money’
To the editor:
Thank you for your stance on free obituaries [“Monetizing the Dead,” Dec. 3, page A2].
When I lost my husband — a World War II vet — the local daily newspaper wanted a minimum of $99 for his obituary. I guess they charge by the letter.
After I was feeling better, I sent a letter to the boss labeling their fees “blood money” — just a way to make money on other people’s grief. I never got a response.
Good luck with our Outer Cape paper. I am a subscriber.

Remembering David Asher
To the editor:
This past Sunday, my husband, Mark, and I were treated to a wonderful holiday dinner, presented to us safe in our home by the David Asher Senior Dinner committee.
Back in the day, Mark and I were blessed to know David and worked with him on many community projects. We were part of the beginning of the senior dinner — when we were the young worker bees. I cooked a turkey and served. My cooking skills were superior to my serving skills. Fortunately, a strong, silent, competent server quietly kept me from dropping a full plate on an unsuspecting senior. Mark helped with the clean-up and garbage removal.
It was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed participating for several years. We had respect and affection for David, and are so glad the tradition is continuing.
To this year’s crew: Thank you very much for including us, and for remembering David and this wonderful gift. Keep it going, folks; it is well worth it, and much appreciated.
