Lewis was born in Provincetown on March 28, 1947, the son of the late Helen M. Davis, who worked for the Murchison family, and Beaty Davis, a skilled carpenter.
Lewis was a man of many talents and callings, from fisherman to scuba diver to self-employed taxi driver. He was also a landlord, worked in excavation and with horses, and could fix anything. He worked for Harold McGinn of E-Z-Doze-It Excavating in Wellfleet for many years.
“He loved people, children, animals, and nature,” said his friend Peter Cook. “He enjoyed his solitude and was well read. He read for pleasure and gained a lot of knowledge from reading. He prayed diligently for others, helping anyone in need. Lewis was bigger than life, strong as an ox, and he had the biggest heart, loudest laugh, and an amazing smile.”
Lewis had many friends from all walks of life and was a best friend to many, said Cook. “Entering the halls of Alcoholics Anonymous 52 years ago was a turning point in his life that he would want to share,” he said. “He became an elder statesman helping countless people find their way to a better life and to a higher power he called God.”
Lewis is survived by his daughters, Cirrus Farber of Orleans and Seneca Lawry of Hawaii, and by his life partner of many years, Sue (Sateriale) Souza of North Truro, her sons, James Souza and Andrew Souza and wife Carly of Eastham, and Sue’s grandsons, James Souza of North Truro and Andrew and Grayson Souza of Eastham. Lewis is also survived by his cousins Martha Scanlon of Ashland, John Scanlon of Manchester, Conn., and Veronica Bermingham of Windsor Locks, Conn.
Lewis was predeceased by his brother, Billy, who died at age one of meningitis, and by his former wife, Pam, and their son, Oceanis, named after the only child born on the Mayflower.
Plans for services have not yet been announced. There will be a gathering in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Provincetown at his parents’ final resting place. Donations in Lewis’s name may be made to the Lily House in Wellfleet.
