Thomas Walter Murzyn died peacefully in his Eastham home on Aug. 1, 2024 after fighting metastatic cancer. He was 73.
Tom was born on Aug. 12, 1950 in Hartford, Conn. to Walter Murzyn and Kirsten (Klepp) Murzyn. He was the oldest of five children and grew up in rural Barkhamsted, Conn., where the family ran the Hilltop Nursery. Most summers were spent in Wellfleet or Truro.
Tom graduated from Northwestern Regional #7 High School in Winsted, Conn. and earned a degree in civil engineering at Hartford State Technical College. He had a successful career as a land surveyor with Schofield Brothers in Orleans, Nickerson & Berger/Coastal Engineering in Orleans, Terry Eldridge Engineering in Chatham, and Nantucket Surveyors. He most recently worked as a general contractor and landscape designer, helping friends and family by surveying their properties. He specialized in surveying local shellfishermen’s grants in Wellfleet Harbor.
A “friend of Bill W.,” Tom helped many on their way to sobriety.
He loved everything about cars, especially racing and design. Every fall he attended the Lime Rock Race Track in Connecticut, where he once raced his spiffed-up BMW. He also made excellent clams casino and linguini with clam sauce.
Tom is survived by brothers Paul Murzyn and wife MaryEllen and Michael Murzyn and wife Cheryl of Eastham; sisters Kristina Eschenheimer and husband Jesse of Newport, R.I. and Nancy Murzyn of Orleans; nieces Nora and Morgan Eschenheimer of Newport; other family here and in Norway; and many true friends.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Wellfleet Methodist Church, 246 Main St. Burial will be private.
