Joan Elizabeth Lenane-Fuxjager of Provincetown died peacefully at home on May 5, 2024. She was 92.
The younger of two daughters of Samuel and Margaret (Soden) Goodemoot, Joan was born on Dec. 11, 1931 in the Inwood section of Manhattan. She attended Good Shepherd School in Inwood and Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Park Terrace.
She graduated from secretarial school and then married John Lenane in 1951. After the birth of their two daughters, Joan began a more than 30-year career as an executive assistant in a range of industries from construction to fashion to home health care. She worked for a time with the American Merchandizing Corp. and with Stern’s department store.
Joan and John divorced, and in 1963 she married Robert Fuxjager. In 1977, they moved to Kingston, N.Y. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and attending courses with her husband at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.
Shortly after Robert’s death in 1992, Joan retired to Provincetown to be closer to her daughter Joan. She started her many years of volunteer work at the Center for Coastal Studies and the Provincetown Council on Aging, serving for several years on the board of the Friends of the Provincetown COA.
She enjoyed attending luncheons and other activities at the COA, including playing Scrabble and bridge. Joan was an animal lover and especially enjoyed Coastal Studies whale watches, and she relished the company over the years of her canine and feline friends.
For a number of years, Joan spent winters in Stuart and Boynton Beach, Fla., where she volunteered at the Boynton Beach Senior Center. She moved back to Provincetown in 2019 to spend more time with her daughter.
Joan is survived by daughters Dorothy Lenane of Kingston, N.Y. and Joan A. Lenane of Provincetown, as well as her daughter-in-law, Sally Rose, good friends Robert Henneberry and Larry Moodry, and her ever-vigilant canine companion, Tucker.
She was predeceased by her sister, Eileen Seeley.
A funeral Mass was held on May 8, 2024 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Provincetown Council on Aging, 2 Mayflower St., Provincetown 02657.
