Victor Powell, whose leather workshop above the Old Colony Tap on Commercial Street in Provincetown was legendary, died quietly at his home on March 27, 2022. His death at age 72 was confirmed by his wife, Ardis Markarian, who said he had been sick for a long time.
Victor was the owner of Skin Leather in Provincetown, which he opened in 1982. In 2000, he opened Victor Powell’s Workshop upstairs at 323 Commercial, where he made custom sandals, other hand-stitched leather goods, and sculpture.
Among the fans and customers of the self-taught sandal-maker were designer Michael Kors, actress Nicole Kidman, and Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley of Boston.
“Victor Powell is a man who follows his passions, and his leather creations attest to a life lived authentically, well off the outside world’s beaten path,” wrote Cape Cod Life in a 2011 profile.
Victor is survived by Ardis, his wife of 44 years, and by his goldendoodle, Dulcie.
