Lorraine Maren Hope died of natural causes at her home in Orleans with her family at her side on Aug. 26, 2021. She was 84.
The daughter of Ingolf and Ida (Flachsbart) Hope, she was born in Concord on March 16, 1937. In Lorraine’s childhood, her sister Carolyn said, “Concord was very rural, and there weren’t many things to do but to explore nature.” Her mother gardened and tended her bird feeders while Lorraine learned about plants and birds, through which she developed her creativity, especially in relation to the land.
After studying art at Lasell College in Newton, she took further courses at Tufts University and later enrolled in the landscape architecture program at Radcliffe College. Before finishing the program, however, she married her first husband, the late Martin Andic, in 1960.
They left soon after for England, where Martin pursued a graduate degree in philosophy at Oxford. After he completed his studies, they camped with their tent all around Europe, driving their Volkswagen bug. Lorraine remembered that time as being one of the best of her life.
When she returned to Concord with Martin, she had two children, Nicolas and Clarissa. When the children were teenagers, she and Martin divorced. He died in Canada in 2010.
After the divorce, Lorraine worked for architect Michael Rosenfeld of Acton. Through that job, she was able to re-ignite her passion for the land, as she filled various roles in the firm, including landscape designer. She made many lasting friendships there.
In the late 1980s, Lorraine married her second husband, the late Lawrence Trabulsi, and moved to Pittsfield. They had a shared sense of humor and a love of travel. Rekindling the joy of her youth, they returned to Europe many times before retiring to Orleans in 1995. According to her sister, “She followed me down here.”
After Lawrence died in 2013, Lorraine spent her later years enjoying hobbies that included needlepoint, gardening, reading, beading, and refinishing furniture. She especially loved being with her two springer spaniels and, later, her mini schnauzers, and spending time with her friends and family. “She loved the outdoors and her roses,” which always gave her pleasure, said Carolyn.
Lorraine is remembered for her kindness, generosity, and steadfastness; once she made her mind up, there was no going back. Her strength of will was evident to the very end.
She is survived by her sisters, Sylvia Rocheford of Brewster, Carolyn Crowell of Wellfleet, and Linda Defina of Ashtabula, Ohio; her son, Nicolas Andic of Hyannis; her daughter, Clarissa Andic of Los Angeles; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held for Lorraine on Aug. 28, 2021. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made in Lorraine’s name. For online condolences, visit nickersonfunerals.com.
