Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 12 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Extra from Brewster: a Rufous Hummingbird was banded at Wing Island this week, a rare summer record for the eastern U.S. for this species of the Mountain West.

A Black-Headed Gull and an Atlantic Puffin were seen at Race Point in Provincetown, where other sightings this week included 2 Royal Terns, 2 Arctic Terns, a Black Tern, 230 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, 75 Cory’s Shearwaters, 6 Great Shearwaters, and 5 Manx Shearwaters.
There were 2 Royal Terns and 17 Whimbrels at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary.
The Chuck-Will’s-Widow is still in Eastham, plus now there’s a new bird in town, a Pied-Billed Grebe.
