This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, April 15 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Birds in Provincetown this week included a Pacific Loon and 3 Common Murres at Race Point. There were also 40 Blue Jays, 20 Golden-Crowned Kinglets, 5 Palm Warblers, and 5 Rusty Blackbirds at Beech Forest. And at MacMillan Pier, a Harlequin Duck.

The Snow Goose is one of the world’s most abundant waterfowl species, according to the American Bird Conservancy. But they are seen by fewer people because they nest in the tundra, much of which is above the Arctic Circle. Most are snow white, but these birds can also have different morphs. The dark gray ones were once thought to be a separate species named the Blue Goose. “The white and blue forms readily breed together, and the goslings from a single clutch can be either white or blue — sort of the way humans have brown or blue eyes,” says the Conservancy entry on this bird. In Eastham, two Sandhill Cranes were seen flying by the Salt Pond Visitor Center on April 8. The Pacific Loon described here last week continued on Great Pond. Also, two Snow Geese continued at Fort Hill in Eastham.
