This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Oct. 1 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Birds at Race Point in Provincetown this week included a Baird’s Sandpiper and a Pacific Loon, plus 23 Red-Necked Phalaropes, an American Golden-Plover, 16 Parasitic Jaegers, a Northern Fulmar, 65 Cory’s Shearwaters, 16 Great Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 14 Manx Shearwaters, and 2,300 Tree Swallows.

With this bird, courtship roles are reversed, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s listing on the Red-Necked Phalarope. “The larger, brighter females do the courting. In fact, a female has been seen engaging in aerial pursuit of a male, usually in the company of many females. The males always incubate the eggs and raise the chicks.” Also: “Sometimes females mate with more than one male. Where food is abundant and a male is available, females may produce two batches of eggs.” The aquarium’s writeup says these birds are able to swim from birth, so chicks leave the nest soon after hatching. A Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher and a Connecticut Warbler were seen in Wellfleet.

A Brown Pelican was seen again this week on the bay off South Wellfleet and North Eastham.
