Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 27 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
A Wood Stork was found in a recently cleared area along the Herring River in Wellfleet over the weekend, representing just the third Cape Cod record of this species. A Hooded Warbler and a Yellow-Throated Vireo were also seen in the area. There was a Caspian Tern at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included an American Golden Plover, 4 Whimbrels, a Red Knot, 4 Parasitic Jaegers, a Black Tern, 2,200 Common Terns, 500 Roseate Terns, 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, 4 Cory’s Shearwaters, 12 Great Shearwaters, 5 Sooty Shearwaters, and 45 Manx Shearwaters.
