This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Oct. 24 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

From Race Point to Herring Cove in Provincetown, birds reported included a Caspian Tern, a Little Gull, a Purple Sandpiper, a Red-Necked Grebe, 13 Razorbills, a Common Murre, 13 Manx Shearwaters, 1,200 Northern Gannets, and 20 American Pipits.

In spite of their name, American Tree Sparrows are ground birds, according to the Cornell Bird Lab. They are here to forage in the winter and in spring will return to their breeding grounds in the far northern tundra. They need to eat about 30 percent of their body weight each day. There was an early American Tree Sparrow in North Truro.

A Common Murre continued at Wellfleet Harbor this week.

Two Whimbrels were seen in Eastham.
