This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 22 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

A Royal Tern and 2 Seaside Sparrows were seen in Nauset Marsh in Eastham this week.

“No birder can forget that first breeding male Blackburnian Warbler: the intricate black-and-white plumage set off by flame-orange face and throat, the impossibly high-pitched flourish at the end of the song,” write the experts at the Cornell Bird Lab. Problem is, they perch high in conifers so they’re hard to see. They suggest following “the male’s buzzy song” — and waiting patiently. (Photo by Alan Schmierer)

A Seaside Sparrow was seen at the Wellfleet Bay sanctuary.

There was a Blackburnian Warbler at High Head in Truro.
