This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Aug. 15 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

There was a Seaside Sparrow at Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary this week and a Dickcissel elsewhere in Wellfleet.

“When a female settles in his territory, a male Dickcissel is an attentive mate, accompanying her as she forages or inspects nest sites,” according to the Cornell Bird Lab. But once she begins nesting, he will often take a second mate. Later, the Cornell experts say, “The male does not participate in any aspect of parental care but spends the entire season defending his territory.” (Photo courtesy USFWS)

The Sanctuary’s report didn’t include any sightings from our other towns. The thing is, we’ve been getting ready for Carnival out here. There was one out-of-town happening worth reporting, however: the state’s first-ever Lesser Sand-Plover was discovered at South Cape Beach in Mashpee on Monday and continued into at least Tuesday.
