This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, July 18 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

This week’s sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Royal Tern, 11 Piping Plovers, 3 Black Terns, 16 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, 29 Cory’s Shearwaters, 43 Great Shearwaters, 10 Sooty Shearwaters, 3 Manx Shearwaters, a Bald Eagle, and an American Kestrel.

“Chuck-Will’s-Widows and Eastern Whip-Poor-Wills are birds of the night, built with huge eyes to see in the dark and cryptic plumage to hide them during the day. They’ve got tiny little bills that open up to reveal large, gaping mouths that make it easier to gulp down insects whole,” writes Nicholas Lund in Audubon magazine. “With all these ridiculous features, you’d think these birds would be easy to spot. Nope.” He goes on: “They’re so well camouflaged that only the luckiest birders can spot them.” That is, until nightfall, when “they’ll fill the evening with their loud, sadistic songs.” (Photo by A. A Chuck-Will’s-Widow was heard calling near Nauset Light Beach in Eastham on July 12, and a Stilt Sandpiper was seen in Nauset Marsh.

There was a Clapper Rail in Wellfleet.
