This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, July 11 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Songbirds make up about 90 percent of the Sharp-Shinned Hawk’s diet, according to the ornithologists at Cornell’s bird lab. They prefer birds the size of American Robins or smaller (especially warblers, sparrows, and thrushes), though they also eat quail, shorebirds, doves, swifts, woodpeckers, and even falcons. While nesting, they bring their babies the nestlings and fledglings of other birds to eat. (Photo by Ed Sharron/NPS)

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Whimbrel, 2 Parasitic Jaegers, an Arctic Tern, 5 Black-Legged Kittiwakes, 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, 400 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, and 12 Cory’s Shearwaters.

There was a Sharp-Shinned Hawk in Truro.
