This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, June 13 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Least Bitterns eat mainly small fish such as minnows, sunfish, and perch. They also eat small snakes, frogs, tadpoles, salamanders, slugs, crayfish, other crustaceans, shrews, mice, dragonflies, and leeches. They may occasionally prey on the young of Yellow-Headed Blackbirds. Before eating crustaceans, they trim off the hardest parts of their exoskeletons. A Franklin’s Gull was photographed at Race Point in Provincetown on June 9.

There was a Least Bittern and a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak in Truro.
